Roland:  TR 909 gets slammed big time...

petey-g.... TR 909 gets slammed big time... (17-Sep-02  12:55AM )

- OK, I just picked up a 909 a few months back and really enjoy using it. Alot of people on the synth site have been slamming it big time.

So, I want to ask the question to all of you: Is it a bad thing that the sound of the 909 is so recognizable? For me, I make music that has sounds I like, and the sound of the 909 is quite pleasing to my ears. The fact that the sequencer is killer on it allows me to get the groove factor of the loop I'm working on just right. By adjusting the levels on it and compressing / EQ'ing right, the sound fits perfectly as the anchor to the tunes. I like to create warped and original sounds that frame themselves around the sound of the 909, but that kick always brings me back to the root of the song.

Will I get bored of the sound? I highly doubt it, since I've been listening to it for the last 20 years. However, being a newbie to it, I find it to be a pleaure to use. I may end up disliking it some time in the future, but I'll have made some fun tracks with it that I can listen to when I grow old and hard of hearing. I'm sure that I'll still be able to hear that kick...

Your thoughts are appreciated.
