Analog hihats... (14-May-02 07:56AM
)
- Hi ladys and gents, well mostly gents :)
I'm seeking some tips on how to create a crispy hihat on an analog synth.
I have a MS20 and I'm doing a track now ich is almost exclusively MS20 :)
Well, almost cuz the hihats I'm getting from my MC303 right now :(
So do you guys have some tips on how to create some neato hats?
Pink/white noise?
Short decay?
Little attack?
Any tip would be great!

- Hi Sticky - yeah that's a good link .... I've used it many a time.
I can't wait to hear your new track ,Guido!
About my kit list you asked about ...omg...well, it's a huge list! Let me compile it tonight and hopefuly take some pics too.
In the mean time, take your time on your song. I know it will be a good one:)
Peace !

- does the ms-20 have a ring mod? if you could ring mod an oscillator with an oscillator which is being fm'd by a noise source and then slapping a little bit of hp filter on the mix of the two, little bit of release on the vca envelope. you could probobly get an ok analogue hh i'd think.

- jep korg has a ringmod...
I'll try that tonight, thanks castrol!
And thank you Kypski I'll be looking to see your gearlist :)

- some other things stickx.
if you can get away mixing 3 sources (i'm not even sure the ms-20 has two oscillators)...ring mod'd osc+noise fm'd osc+noise. that is something to try. maybe with different filtering on the oscs and noise. seperate vca envelopes for the osc's and noise would also be helpfull.
your typical three part hh is just reusing the same sources three times with different vca envelopes to achieve an open, closed, and i think cymbal type sounds. short, little longer, much longer.
you'll need to play with the tuning of the 2 osc's to get a clangy inharmonic type sound....but twiddling knobs is fun :).
and....if you can...try fm'ing that osc with noise by sticking the noise out into a pitch mod in, AND the key track (might be called something else) in.
without getting into the specifics, one i think will be logarithmically scalled (pitch mod), the other will be linearly scalled (key track in). the fm you know and love is linearly scalled audio rate modulation of an oscillators pitch.
I THINK....i can't find the specifics off hand. but i seem to recall that being somewhat correct if not bastardized a little bit.
report back!

- Uhm, The frequency of the noise on OSC1 can't be modulated (I think)
Also, if it's of any help, there are three noise sources: VCO1 noise (white noise) and on the patch pad there are two noises, one white and one pink.
Two filter routings: the usual LP and HP filter section and (on the ext signal pad) a HP and LP section (could be only LP a can't recall right now :)
Two Envelopes: one HADSR and one DAR (delay attack and release)

- well, i got a bit wee confused. fm'ing an oscillator with noise is basically going to make pitchable noise.
you want clangy sounds. the fm idea still holds up, but i don't think you'll get very predictable results ring mod'ing the first osc with the second, and then fm'ing the second osc with the first. it will create a weird sort of feedback, which will probobly sound cool :)...but not give you a very good clangy sound...probobly.
i'm just giving ideas. i don't own an ms-20 (looking at the patch panel made my head swim...), your the one who is going to have to work his magic on recreating them :)
unless you can find someone who has patch diagrams made on an ms-20 to make what you want.
reading that sos tut is a good base for these ideas.
not relevant to hihats but...you may find this intersting (i did).
